Federal Magistrates Court of Australia

 

The objective of this court is to provide simple options to litigation in the Federal Court of Australia and the Family Court of Australia and to also relieve the workload of these two courts.

 

 

What does this court do?

 

The court hears the following matters:

 

  • Family law and child support

 

  • Administrative law

 

  • Admiralty law

 

  • Bankruptcy

 

  • Copyright

 

  • Human rights

 

  • Industrial law

 

  • Migration

 

  • Privacy

 

  • Trade practices

 

 

Who can appear?

 

You can apply to the court if the court has jurisdiction as listed above to hear your case.

 

 

Court Location

 

The Federal Magistrates Court is based in the same premises as the other Federal Courts.

 

Its primary locations are Melbourne, Dandenong, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Darwin, Launceston, Hobart, Newcastle, Parramatta, Perth and Townsville.

 

In addition, the court conducts regular circuits (sittings) in other regional and metropolitan locations.
