Youth Drug and Alcohol Court

 

What does this court do?

 

This is a pilot program within the criminal justice system which gives the offenders an opportunity to participate in an intensive rehabilitation before they are sentenced. This is a six month program which sees participants undergo detoxification and rehabilitation.

 

They also attend educational and vocational classes and through this program they regularity appear before the court. The courts purpose is to rehabilitate the young offenders of their alcohol or drug problem.

 

 

Who can appear?

 

In order to be able to appear young offenders can be referred but they must satisfy the following:

 

  • Plead guilty;

 

  • Are charged with an offence the Children's Court can deal with;

 

  • Have a serious drug or alcohol problem;

 

  • Live, or identifies with, the program catchment area;

 

  • Are not eligible for a Young Offenders Act caution or youth justice conference;

 

  • Are suitable for treatment and rehabilitation; and

 

  • Agree to participate in the YDAC program while on bail.

 

 

Court Location

 

The court is local as part of the three Children’s Courts namely Campbelltown, Bidura and Parramatta.
